How Two Doctors Chose Passion Over Comfort to Help Millions Turn Memories into Art

Sometimes, the Best Decisions Begin with a Childhood Dream

When was the last time you picked up a paintbrush—not because you had to, but simply because it made you happy?

For many of us, painting belongs to childhood. It reminds us of colourful afternoons, messy hands, and the freedom to create without worrying about whether the result was perfect. As life becomes busier, those moments often disappear. Careers, responsibilities, and routines slowly replace creativity.

But for Dr. Apurva Makwana, that love for art never faded.

Even while building a successful career as a physiotherapist in Ahmedabad, painting remained a constant part of his life. Long before Paintwaint existed, art was already his favourite way to unwind. Hyper-realistic portraits, detailed sketches, and creative experiments filled his free time, often before sunrise while the rest of the city was still asleep.

For him, painting was never just a hobby.

It was peace.

It was expression.

It was home.

Two Different Backgrounds, One Shared Vision

Every successful brand has a story, but Paintwaint's story is unusual because it began in healthcare rather than the art industry.

Dr. Apurva Makwana built his professional life as a physiotherapist while continuing to nurture his passion for painting. Coming from a middle-class family, following a medical career felt like the practical choice, yet creativity remained an inseparable part of who he was.

His wife, Dr. Saloni Makwana, pursued medicine as an MBBS doctor and came from a business-oriented Marwadi family. While Apurva saw painting as a passion he made time for, Saloni saw something much bigger.

She recognised that his talent had the potential to inspire thousands of people.

More importantly, she believed creativity shouldn't belong only to professional artists.

Together, they imagined a brand that could make art simple, enjoyable, and accessible for everyone.

Choosing Passion Over Security

Leaving a stable profession is one of the hardest decisions anyone can make.

Apurva had a successful career and financial stability. Walking away from that certainty wasn't easy.

Family members had questions.

Friends had doubts.

Many wondered why someone would leave a respected medical profession to build a business around DIY art.

But every entrepreneur reaches a moment where following passion becomes more important than staying comfortable.

On 26 September 2023, his birthday, Dr. Apurva resigned from his job and officially began the next chapter of his journey.

That decision marked the beginning of Paintwaint.

Not simply as a business.

But as a mission.

A Simple Question Changed Everything

While observing people around him, the founders noticed something interesting.

Most people admired beautiful artwork.

Very few believed they could create it.

Painting often felt intimidating.

People assumed they needed years of experience, expensive materials, or natural talent.

Paintwaint was created to challenge that belief.

The founders asked a simple question:

What if anyone could create artwork they were proud of—even without artistic experience?

That single question became the foundation of the brand.

Turning Memories into Art

Paintwaint introduced Paint by Number Kits with one clear purpose—to make painting enjoyable for everyone.

Instead of starting with a blank canvas, customers receive a numbered design, premium paints, brushes, and easy-to-follow instructions.

The result is a creative experience that's relaxing, rewarding, and beginner-friendly.

Soon, the idea evolved even further.

People wanted more than beautiful paintings.

They wanted paintings that meant something.

Favourite family photographs.

Wedding memories.

Travel moments.

Beloved pets.

Children's smiles.

This inspired the creation of the Custom Paint by Number Kit, allowing customers to transform their own photographs into personalised artwork.

Because memories deserve more than digital storage.

They deserve a place on your wall.

Creativity Has Many Forms

As Paintwaint grew, so did its creative collection.

Today, customers can choose from a range of personalised art experiences, including:

  • Paint by Number Kits for relaxing DIY painting.

  • Custom Paint by Number Kits that transform personal photographs into handmade artwork.

  • Dot by Number Kits, offering a mindful and satisfying way to create detailed art one dot at a time.

  • Custom Dot by Number Kits for recreating cherished memories in a completely new artistic style.

  • Faceless Portrait Kits that celebrate emotions through elegant minimalist designs.

  • Selfie Paint Kits, turning everyday photographs into meaningful keepsakes.

Every product shares the same purpose:

Helping people celebrate memories through creativity.

Growth Built One Customer at a Time

Like every startup, Paintwaint began with small steps.

The first few orders arrived one by one.

Every satisfied customer became a source of motivation.

Then something remarkable happened.

Creative videos shared on social media began reaching millions of people. One reel crossed 3 million views, introducing thousands of new customers to the idea that anyone could become an artist.

Today, Paintwaint has grown into a team of around 25 passionate individuals, serves 700–800 customers every month, and continues to expand with a single goal—to make personalised creativity accessible to more families across India.

For the founders, these milestones are meaningful, but they aren't the definition of success.

The greatest achievement is hearing customers say:

"I never thought I could paint something this beautiful."

More Than a Business

Paintwaint isn't simply about selling DIY art kits.

It's about slowing down in a fast-moving world.

It's about spending quality time with family.

It's about creating something with your own hands.

It's about transforming ordinary photographs into lifelong memories.

Every completed painting tells a story.

Every brushstroke preserves an emotion.

Every customer becomes part of the journey.

Looking Towards the Future

The journey has only just begun.

Paintwaint continues to innovate, introduce new personalised art experiences, and inspire more people to reconnect with their creativity.

The vision is ambitious—to become one of India's leading personalised gifting and creative lifestyle brands while making art approachable for everyone, regardless of age or experience.

Because the founders still believe the same thing they believed on day one:

Art isn't only for artists.

It's for everyone.

A Message from the Founders

"When we started Paintwaint, we weren't trying to build just another art brand. We wanted to create experiences that bring people together, help families preserve their memories, and remind everyone that creativity doesn't require perfection. If our products inspire someone to pick up a paintbrush for the first time, we've achieved something far more meaningful than selling a kit—we've helped create a memory."
